Recently, we welcomed a very special duo to our food packing session — a grandfather and his 8-year-old granddaughter, Emma. For him, it had been more than a decade since his last volunteer experience back in Illinois. For her, it was a brand-new opportunity to give back and see firsthand the impact of helping others.

Emma shared that she knows many kids at her school who receive the weekend food packages we pack each week. Seeing the bags come together gave her a whole new perspective — one that connected what she sees at school to the kindness happening in her community.

Her grandfather expressed how meaningful the evening was for both of them:

We really enjoyed being able to participate. Emma is very helpful and eager to get involved. I’m trying to encourage and instill that giving to others behavior and mentality. Last night gave us both the chance to do just that.”

Their story is a beautiful reminder that giving back isn’t just about helping others today — it’s about inspiring the next generation to carry on the mission of kindness and service.

We are so grateful for families like Emma and her grandfather, who not only show up to support local children in need but also work to pass along the values of generosity and compassion. Together, they’re making a difference — one food bag, one smile, and one lesson at a time.
